Our
Makerspace!
The kids are hard at work in Franklin Magnet's new Makerspace!
Our school has the largest Makerspace in the Bed-Stuy/Fort Greene/Williamsburg area! We have transformed a gymnasium-sized room into a creative space for children of all ages. Kids are using this room for woodworking, pottery, printmaking, puppetry, robotics...and for projects of their own design. Our Magnet Partner, The Beam Center, conducts engineering residencies in this space, too. The room is abuzz with activity, as kids scan the shelves for new materials to add to their projects. (We gratefully accept donations, too -- so if you have any extra wood, paint, fabric, or tools, please let us know!) A new addition to the room is our professional-quality Epilog Laser Cutter. With the installation of four new student computers and design software, students will be able to design products made of wood, acrylic, and cardboard -- and then see the products laser-cut into those materials right before their eyes! Our laser cutter is an integral part of our STEM program, and we can't wait to see what the kids will create! Please check here throughout the year for exciting updates from Ms. Peterson and Mr. G!
